Monte Christopher Sandwich

For christopher's baptism we decided to make "monte christopher" sandwiches. These were very yummy and filling but the frying did take a bit of patience. the kids enjoyed the butterfly presentation of their half sandwiches.

Ingredients:

  • batter:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 egg

  • sandwich:
  • 2 slices white texas bread
  • 2 slices turkey deli meat
  • 2 slices ham deli meat
  • 2 slices swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp red currant jelly
  • icing sugar to dust

Preparation:

  • to make batter sift flour, salt and baking powder together. Add water to beaten egg and then to flour mixture. Mix well and then set aside.
  • to make sandwich: on top of one slice of bread add a slice of turkey, ham, swiss cheese. Add another slice of turkey, ham and swiss cheese and top with second piece of bread. Dip sandwich on all sides in batter mixture and grill. This works best with a flat pan where you can rotate the sandwiches to grill not just the top and bottom but also the sides.*
  • sprinkle sandwiches with icing sugar and serve with red currant jelly.

Notes:

* The original blue bayou monte cristo sandwich says to cut the sandwich into quarters and use toothpicks to hold the triangles together. dip in batter and deep fry at 360 F until golden brown. However many versions of the monte cristo sandwich sa
