Cinnamon Twists Over A Campfire

Categories: Bread

The kids love roasting spider dogs and marshmallows on a campfire and when I found some campfire recipes in one of the Parents Canada magazine issues, I thought it was time to expand our repertoire.  The cinnamon twists reminded us of baking bread at Hexenwasser in Austria and they were especially delicious when eaten warm with homemade pear jelly.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup oil

Preparation:

  • Stir together dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add milk and oil and stir until you have a soft dough.
  • Knead until you get a soft doughy ball.
  • Pat out until dough is half an inch thick and cut into strips.
  • Wind around a cleaned stick and roast over hot coals until golden.
(We found that they didn't stay on that great when wound around the stick so we ended up just squishing the dough together a bit.)
  • Eat warm, with jam.

Notes:

  • Combine dry ingredients at home and bring them in a resealable bag to your campsite!
