Challah Bread

Bread Machine
Ingredients:
1 cup water
2 eggs
1 1/4 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. sugar
3 tbsp. butter (room temperature)
3 2/3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
1 tsp. bread machine or instant yeast
glaze:
1 egg yolk
1 tbsp. water
1 tsbp. sesame seed (optional)
Preparation:
measure bread ingrediet into baking pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
insert oan into the over chamber.
select dough cycle.
remove dough to a lightly floured board; cover with a large bowl and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
divide dough into 5 portions.
roll each with the palm of your hand into long, smooth ropes 1 inch (2.5cm) in diameter.
taper at ends, leaving the middle thicker.
braid 3 rops and place on prepared baking sheet.
twist the remaining 2 ropes, pinching ends together.
center on the top of braid.
press lightly.
cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 30 to 45 minutes, or until doubled in volume.
meanwhile, preheat oven to 375F (190C)
glaze: when dough has risen, beat together egg yolk and water.
brush the braid with glaze, and, if desired, sprinkle with sesame seed.
bake in preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until braid sounds holow when tapped on the bottom.
