Challah French Toast
Ingredients:
- 1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 8 3/4-inch thick slices chalal bread
- 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
- 1 tsp. coarse sugar
- 1 banada peeled
- powdered sugar, for serving
- maple syrup, for serving
Preparation:
- slice the vanilla pod in half lengthwise.
- use the tip of a paring knife to scrape out all of the beans.
- place the beans in a bowl with a teaspoon of hot water and mix.
- then crack the eggs into the bowl and whisk to blend, breaking up the sticky vanilla beans.
- whisk the milk in.
- dip the bread into the egg mixture, coasting each side on both sides.
- meanwhile, melt the butter in a large skiller over medium0high heat and add as many pieces of challah as can fit comfortably.
- sprinkle the top of each piece with a tiny bit of coarse sugar.
- cook for about 2 minutes, or until the underside is golden brown and the coating is crisp and lacy.
- flip and sprinkle cooked sides with a tiny bit of coase sugar.
- cook for about a minute or 3 longer, or until the second side is browned.
- remove the French toast to a platter and repeat the process until all the pieces are cooked.
- thinly slice the banana over the french toast, dust everything with powdered sugar, and serve with lots and lots of maple syrup.
