maritime brown bread
flipping through the 300 bread recipes from the latest cookbook i have from the library, I came across a maritime bread. well, since i'm from the maritime, I figure i'd better give it a try. it was yummy, and now i have a craving for baked beans!
"what would saturday night be on the east coast of north america without molasses-flavored baked beans and brown bread?"
Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup skim milk powder
- 1 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. packed brown sugar
- 1 tbsp. fancy molasses
- 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1 tsp. bread machine yeast
Preparation:
- measure ingredients into baking pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer
- insert pan into the ovem chamber
- select whole wheat cycle
Note:
- variation: another regional treasure, maple syrup, can be substituted for the molasses to provide sweetnes in either the beans or the brown bread. or use a combination of both.
