Canada Day

Arriving at Fort Wellington

Since Canada Day is free admission and they have special activities for kids, we decided to invite everyone along for a visit.

The first Fort Wellington was erected on this site during the War of 1812 to shelter BRitish regular toops and Canadian milita defending the vital St. Lawrence River transportation route. In February 1813 these soldiers crossed the ice to capture Ogdensburg, N.Y. When rebellion threatened Upper Canada in 1838 the fort was in ruins. Construction had scarecely begun on the present fort in November 1838 when a band of Canadian rebels and American sympathizers attacked; they were defeated nearby at the Battle of the Windwill by troops assembled at the fort.

We are here!

The war memorial is new-ish.

Bryan and Samantha sit on a bench as we wait for the Hayek's to arrive.

The visitor centre.

Happy Canada Day!

Bryan and Murielle check out some toys... looking for ideas for Christmas gifts to make?

The kids enjoy some colouring activities.

Bryan checks out more toys at the games table.

Samantha gets some old-fashioned (?!) Canada Day tattoos.

Look, it's a butterfly!

Giddy-up uncle Khalil!

Samantha shows off her tattoo to Joe and Tante Silly.

Time to head into the fort itself...
