Day 9 - July 13: Fundy, Albert County, Lake Cave, & Flower Pots: Hopewell Rocks at Low Tide

Through their tradition of storythelling, the Mi'kmaq have their own legend to explain the unique rock formations known as the flowerpot rocks. One legend has it that the Hopewell Rocks are unfortunate Mi'kmaq who were turned to stone by angry great whales that once lived in the Bay of Fundy. Enslaved by the whales, many of the Mi'kmaq tried to escape. Just as they reached the beach, the whales transformed them into the formations which exist today.

The flower pots were impressive but nothing could beat the plain old mud for Samantha who got so muddy that a chorus of "oh my! look at that little girl!" greeted us back at the top of the stairs. We spent almost as much time at the clean up/hose off station as we did looking at the flower pots!

Back at the Hopewell Rocks for low tide exploration.

Walking along the paths to get to the ocean floor access point.

View from the top of the cliffs as we head down the stairs.

The flowerpots!

Enjoying another beautiful day along the Bay of Fundy.

Samantha and Christopher are happy as clams.

Exploring the mud up close.

Samantha climbing among the flower pots.

Up close you can really see how the tides have carved the cliffs and flower pots.

Areas are roped off where the rocks are too unstable.

Samantha hides in a 'cave'... you can see the conglomerate rocks that make up the cliffs.

More flower pots.

New flower pots in the making?

Samantha playing among the rocks.

The petrified Mi'kmaq.

Samantha makes up a game of 'scrabble' in the mud.

Looking across the bay of fundy.

Samantha getting close and personal with the muck.

Snail paths on the mud flats.

After rescuing Samantha from being stuck in the muck, we start to head back.

Having successfully climbed the stairs without touching any thing or any one, Samantha shows us she's ready for the cleaning station.

Hoses and boot brushes help the clean-up.

Yup... we were here for a while!

Another look from the viewing station, this time at low tide.

Samantha with the steering wheel at the playground.

Rubby relaxes in the pirate ship.

We made it back to Alma early enough to still get an ice cream cone.

Another visit with the alma pirates.

Sammy-plane!

A quick stop at the Fundy visitor centre to say bye to Bruce and Gertie...

...and to get Sam's level 1 badge.
