There was a geocache listed up the hill just south of San Martín de los Andes and we figured we had all afternoon still, so we decided to go for it. But the geocaching curse pervailed and although we searched and searched for quite a long time it was a big fat DNF (Did Not Find). On the bright side, we spotted our new animal of the day... a little bat hiding in a hole in the rocks.
After our disappointing geocaching attempt we headed on to San Junin de los Andes to find our accomodations. The guidebook had suggested San Junin as a place to stay because it was supposed to be much cheaper than San Martín. But what a disappointment! The cabanas were all more than double in price from Bariloche, and the hotels all seemed booked solid! We finally found a somewhat reasonably priced apartment but it was nowhere as nice as the last place we had and the whole town seemed kind of dodgy compared to the beautiful towns of Bariloche or San Martín. We even considered heading back to San Martín but we figured San Junin placed us more centrally to see what Lanin National Park had to offer and in the end we planned to be out sightseeing most of the day anyway so the hotel was just a place to sleep.
Samantha liked the dandelions at the place where we stopped to search for a geocache.
We didn't find the cache but we found this little sleeping bat instead which was almost more rewarding anyway.
Sam at the bat 'cave'.
The cache was supposed to be somewhere along here but the rocky cliff made the gps reception bounce pretty badly.
Cool mountains and rock colours along the drive to San Junin.
Some odd shaped mountains in the foothills of the Andes.
Sturnella loyca.
Some locals.
Having supper and watching tv (a treat reserved for vacations) in the apartment.
The kitchenette.
The bathroom and bedroom.
The view from the bedroom out over the back courtyard.
