August 7 to 29, 2010
Although Samantha was a bit disappointed with the crowds, Christopher was quite excited since it was the first time he got to try a lot of the activities such as baking bread (complete with witch spice composed of mice teeth, witch fingernails and frog legs!) over an open fire. The woods were also a nice shady spot to walk in while the sun was at its highest.
Time to head off to the Hexenwald (the witch's woods).
A goat grazing to the side of the path.
Christopher and Samantha go ant riding.
It's good to have balance in your life.
What's on the agenda at the witch's campfire...?
Samantha playing the wood organ.
Sam takes a turn but it's pretty hard going.
So we resort to teamwork.
poppa helps out too.
The witch enlists the kids' help to add the salt and spices (frog legs, mouse teeth, etc)
to their freshly ground flour to make the dough.
The kids watch as the witch kneads the dough.
The kids each get a piece of dough to finish kneading and to put on a stick.
Christopher is very excited... it's his first time making bread at Hexenwasser!
Everyone concentrates as they try to bake their bread without burning it.
Steckenbrot ("stick bread") being cooked over an open fire.
Opa taking pictures of the little witches baking their breads.
This is fun!
When the bread is finished, the kids proudly get to eat it for a snack.
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah!
Sam marvels that the cape breton aunt colony always seems to make it into our vacation photos! ;-)
Sam and Oma resting in a wood cutter's cabin.
Time to leave the Hexenwald and go find some lunch.
