Hana Highway

Before we left our campsite on the slopes of Haleakala, we decided to do the little trail loop in Hosmer Grove to check out Hosmer's failed forestry experiment. It was pretty rainy so we didn't dawdle too long before heading on down the mountain and off to Hana. We had a short stop at the Komodo Bakery along the way to pick up some snacks and then it was off along the infamous Hana Highway. I say infamous because the road is known for it's hairpin turns and narrow bridges. (Although truth be told, we didn't find it that bad). It was a bit rainy (to be expected on the rainy side of the island) but it managed to clear up nicely at most of the truly scenic spots. The Hana highway is Maui's version of the Cabot trail and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the view. Armed with our "Maui Revealed" guidebook we managed to see tons of little hidden gems that most people probably pass right by without seeing.

As we got closer to Hana we saved the sights for later explorations and managed to make it to the Kipahulu campsite (which is also part of Haleakala National Park) before nightfall.
