Day 5 - July 9: Grand-Manan, St John & New River Beach

This morning we were still feeling a little under the weather but when Rubby made Samantha pancakes with strawberries for breakfast. We had to catch the ferry back to the mainland and we didn't have to feel bad about not staying on deck to look for whales... the fog was thick and soupy so there was nothing to see.

We tried in the morning to make reservations at Fundy National Park but were told that there were no sites available and that we couldn't make same-day reservations anyway (when we arrived there the next day it was anything but full but oh well!). So we headed quickly to New River Beach Provincial Campground to set up and then headed off to do a few earthcaches.

Back in black was the name of an earthcache all about Black Beach near St. John. This one was of interest to us in particular since the cache description mentioned a bunch of other black beaches, including one we'd visited in Vik Iceland! The point of the cache was to teach about the magnetic mineral content in the sand and so we were supposed to use a magnet to estimate the percentage. We were all excited with a little souvenier lobster magnet in hand but alas, more sand stuck to the sticky residue of the price tag than did to the tiny magnet. So we took a sample of sand along to do the experiment back at home with a real magnet.

We finished off the day with a visit to St. John to see the Reversing Falls, subject of yet another Earthcache and had our picnic dinner there.
