The Coppermine Trail was a 4km loop going to the coppermine which was the theme of the earthcache we did today. Here is the info from signs along the trail:
"Coppermine - Walk through a cool, shady forest of spruce, birch and maple to the old mine that was operated from 1891 to 1910. You will cross several small foorbridges over tumbling brooks. On the forest floor, emerald moss provides a rich setting for scattered fragments of pure white quartz. It was gold found here in the quartz veins, that first aroused the interest of miners in 1891. A blacksmith shop, bunkhouse, and cookhouse were soon erected, and eight men worked the mine for $1 a day, plus board. However only copper ores (bornite, malachite and chalcopyrite) were extracted in commercial quantities. The ore was removed by road to Point Wolfe until 1910, when the veins were exhausted and the coppermine closed."
View over the Bay of Fundy
Point Wolfe Covered Bridge.
A new display on the logging history of its area and the detrimental effect on the river's salmon population.
View from the bridge out to the bay.
Samantha enjoyed driving through the covered bridge several times.
At the Coppermine trailhead.
These berries looked enticing but we never did find out for sure what they were.
Lots of stops to look for quartz pieces, berries and mushrooms.
A beautiful mushroom and a giant chunk of quartz.
Christopher looks a little tired already!
Our own little tree hugger.
Lots of bridges along the way to play ploumps.
More interesting mushroom and rock finds...!
The mine shaft of the coppermine is pretty much sealed. Only the tailings and a steam boiler mark its place.
Lots of quartz tailings lying around.
Rubby and Samantha head up the steep incline of the mine tailings.
Snack time!
A lookout along the trail on the way back.
