July 5 - 25, 2008
This morning we started off with one of the shorter trails in the Park - Dickson Falls. We found a traditional cache that turned out to be one of 5 geocaches placed by Parks Canada, each based on a theme with some information in the cache and a stamp. Collect all 5 stamps, and you get a geocoin! Hmmm, Rubby suddenly took a renewed interest in the trails of Fundy National Park!
After the Dickson Falls we headed off to find the Coppermine earthcache. Along the way we stopped at an interpretive trail from which we had a great view of the Point Wolfe covered bridge. The coppermine trail was fairly long so afterwards we had a late picnic lunch by the river near the bridge.
While Rubby was contemplating his new quest for the park's geocoin, was also thinking of how to include all the activities required for Samantha to get her Level 1 badge as junior park naturalist. The first thing was to attend one of the park's guided activities so we headed off to the beach to walk on the ocean floor and meet some of the creatures who live there. Samantha was especially excited about the side swimmers after she got to hold one in her hand!
From Herring Cove Beach we seemed pretty close to the Matthew's Head geocache, at least as the crow flies. But alas, we are not crows (old or young!) and the trail turned out to be very windy with steep climbs. Samantha was a trooper but she was so tired she was starting to trip all over the place so she walked back to the car while Rubby got a good workout hauling Christopher to the cache as fast as he could.
Then it was off to the Visitor Centre for another educational activity - a tour of the aquarium! We got to meet Bruce and Gertie (the 2 rock crabs), and lots of other creatures such as moon snails, hermit crabs, sea urchins, etc.
After such a busy day, we decided to get an ice cream treat in the town of Alma just outside the Park limits. And cause we just hadn't had enough excitement for the day yet, we did another short jaunt along the Caribou trail to see the beaver pond and peat bog... and of course to grab a quick geocache. This cache was based on the theme of the flying squirrel and we ended up with a crying flying squirrel of our own when Samantha was so excited to try and spot the squirrel house that she fell right off the boardwalk!
