Day 8 - July 12: Fundy, Salmon River & Alma Beach: Alma Beach

In the afternoon, Rubby went to do the final geocache for his geocoin while the kids explored the Alma Beach at low tide.

What Rubby learned at the Master Forester cache:
The Spruce Budworm is a native insct whose population explodes when large forsts of Balsam Fir attain maturity. A whole army of forest birds use the budowom larvae as food but the insect numbers stay high until the trees die and the worms starve to lower numbers. A vigorous forest of fir replaces teh dying one, which will again provide food for future generations of budworms. THe woods here are at the replacement stage.

What Samantha learned at the Alma Beach interpretive signs:
The moon's gravity pulls everything on the earth slightly towards it, including the Atlantic Ocean which rises approximately 1m. Local shoreline geography like that of the Bay of Fundy can exaggerate this effect whereas in other places it is barely noticeable. The sun also has a gravitational effect and provides 17% of the force in the Bay of Fundy.

While Sammy pirate seems to have been captured at sea...

...Rubby pirate finds the last cache for his coin quest.

Samantha at the mouth of the Upper Salmon River at low tide.

Welcome to Alma! (or is it we come to alma?)

Alma is located right outside the Fundy National Park boundary.

Samantha gets busy finding and identifying the creatures she's been learning about at Fundy Park.

Sea slippers.

A beautiful day on the beach.

Samantha walking back and forth in search of interesting things...

... and getting some mucky hands in the process!

Time to get down and get dirty!

Back from his geocaching adventures, Rubby joins us at the beach.

The small stream is not passable by boats at low tide...
they'll have to wait for high tide to get in and out of the harbour.

Looking back at the wharf and Alma.

Rubby 'reflects' on the Alma beach.

Rubby and Samantha collect flat shells to skip across the water.

Some crab shells.

A sunny but windy day.

Samantha striking a pose.

Buoy! Buoy, baby! Buoy! Buoy, baby!...
