Biosphere (Montreal)

April 26, 2009

Morning

This is Sam expressing how she gets a little bit excited and a little bit scared on the Montreal bridges. (better than a roller coaster ride!)

Getting on to the Jacques-Cartier bridge.

View of downtown Montreal from Ile Sainte-Hélène.

Arriving at the Biosphere.

The aquarium with the eels and other strange fish such as the Rubby-fish.

Rubby started salivating at the sight of all the GPSs lined up. The event was not just for geocachers but to teach people about GPS navigation so these were all loaner GPSs.

Samantha had so much energy she ran around the world. Twice!

The biosphere.

As part of International Polar Year 2007-2008, the biosphere hosted an exhibit called 'Arctic: Walking on Thin Ice' with 40 photographs of the arctic.

A tower along the way.

We stopped to get a couple of regular caches on the island.

A fox! (and also a bird & a squirrel)

Samantha with a view of downtown Montreal and Mount Royal in the background.

Samantha with le Phare du Cosmos - a giant robot by Yves Trudeau.

Part of the old Expo 67 facilities... it's surprising that they've let it get so run down.

Another quick cache...

... and another bridge.

A compass rose... site of the only DNF (did not find) cache of the day.

Some interesting architecture.

Samantha with "L'homme de Calder"

Georallye - station 2 - explosives. It is estimated that 20 million tons of rock were needed to create Ile Notre-Dame and to expand Sainte-Helene island by uniting it with Ile Verte to the south and Ile Ronde to the north. Most of the rock came from the tunnels dug for the Montreal metro as well as the excavation of Ile Verte and Ile Ronde.
