Bonnechere Provincial Park

July 29 to August 3, 2009

Day 4 - Camp activities, Bike Rodeo and Canoeing on the Little Bonnechere River

Today's highlight was a bike rodeo event put on by the local OPP. We were a little frustrated by the lack of interpretive events at the park, especially given that it was a long weekend and the campground was full. Samantha was keen to do the junior ranger program and in order to get her badge she had to complete certain activities which included attending a special event. So off to the bike safety event we went, despite the fact that we seemed to be the only family that didn't have bikes along! The kids had fun as the constable let Christopher and Sammy sit in her police car and wear her hat!

In the afternoon we attempt to find a portage to get past the rapids on the Bonnechere river and although we were successful, the next set of rapids was not far off and we turned back. Samantha and Christopher in the meantime stayed back with Oma for a nap and then headed to the beach.

After supper we finished off the evening with a play put on by the park staff about the history of the park and the people who lived here and in the area.

Christopher wakes up and finds a couple of timbits that Oma missed on her midnight snack.

Another sunny day, hooray!

Well hello Opa!

Bunny comes to say hello too.

The Pine River Ranger Cabin - This is the original ranger cabin from the Pine River site in Algonquin Park. It was moved to Bonnechere Provincial Park in 1992.

If the Ontario parks don't want campers to bring their own wood because of the dangers of bringing in bugs and pests from other areas, maybe they shouldn't charge 7$ a bag!

It's time for the Bike Rodeo to start... the OPP's are all about safety: Be seen, be safe!

We didn't have any bikes along, but we got to walk the course.

Samantha did so well, she's been recruited!

Wouldn't you love to be pulled over by constable Samantha?!

Or how about Constable Christopher?

Here's the definition of a happy camper!

Samantha works hard on her bike safety word find.

The duck family seems quite people friendly.

Going by the sand face again.

Nice of the property owners to provide signage for the park and rapids.

A swimming snake.

A pretty steep entry/exit point.

The portage is not used much... you can barely make out the path through the trees.

Rubby's second portage: the way back.

Again a pretty steep slope to get back in the water.

Cardinal flowers.

Aaagh! It's only early August... we're not ready for red leaves yet!

Water bugs on the river.

To the left!

A hitchhiker.

Dragonfly

All right enough... get a room!

Coming back into the park.

A painted turtle.

Opa can't resist the call of the chanterelles.

A hazelnut.

The beach went out very shallow and Samantha was all proud for swimming so far out.

After the beach, a bit of climbing fun.

Mmmmm, supper tastes so good after a day of outdoor fun in the sun.

Sammy roasts a double double.

The standards for cleanliness go way down when you're camping!

Gummi-frosch!

Samantha working on her Rookie Ranger activities.

One of the rookie ranger activities is to heat some jack pine cones to see how the heat opens up the cones to release the seeds during a forest fire.

Evening entertainment showcases a play in which a resident archeologist discover stories from the park's past.

A cast of ghosts from the past.
