August 7 to 29, 2010
From Brechhornhaus the sign indicated 1.5 hours to get to the peak and we actually managed it under that time (despite the fact that Samantha and Opa paused every couple of minutes to eat blueberries). Along the way we had beautiful sunshine, the sound of cowbells and music echoing across the mountains from someone playing a trumpet on top of Brechhorn. We ended up running into the trumpet player clad in Lederhosen along with his dogs and wife as they were herding the cows down the mountain. You couldn't get a more Austrian mountain experience if you tried! *Grin*
From Brechhornhaus we set off across a rather mucky field.
Since Rubby had to carry Sam across the muck, Christopher got a rare lift from mommy.
But soon it was back to the poppa lift.
Samantha had a slower pace from all the blueberries she was stopping to eat. Time to catch up Samantha!
Mmmmmm, blueberries!
As we start climbing Brechhorn we look back to see Brechhornhaus down
in the fog and the reservoir and chapel in the background.
Samantha and Opa with Fleiding and Guggenkoegele in the background.
While we were squinting in the sun, the folks down in the valley were having a cloudy day!
Opa enjoying the gorgeous weather.
We can already zoom in on the cross at the top of Brechhorn.
Blueberry face!
Panoramic as we climb up Brechhorn.
We zoomed in on Gampdenkogel and spotted all the people at the top for the blessing of the new cross.
The Kaisergebirge.
Christopher having a little snack as he waits for everyone to catch up.
Snack time!
Christopher came up for his own sign for the crosses at the tops of the mountains.
Christopher and Rubby at the snack break.
Time to move on, we're almost there!
Samantha points up to where she hears music coming from.
Doesn't everyone hike up mountains expecting to find men in lederhosen playing trumpets
(we are after all on Brech-"HORN"!)?
Below us the valley is still filled with clouds.
Christopher and Rubby wait at the top of Brechhorn for the rest of us.
The Grosser Rettenstein is in the background but for today we're headed to Brechhorn.
The path we took up the last bit.
Samantha scrambling up the rocks.
The guy with the horn has stopped playing music and is now herding cows down the mountain.
What an amazing hike it's turning out to be!
Grosser Rettenstein in the distance.
Grosser Rettenstein and snow capped mountains of the alps in the distance.
Across the mountain ridge from Brechhorn, Rubby already spies his next goal: Floch.
