South Maui, Lahaina, and the Luau
Today it was time to leave the Kipahulu campsite and the Hana area. We had a pleasant drive along the southern shore and headed all the way to Lahaina in West Maui where we visited the town and ended the evening with the Old Lahaina Luau. It was a long day but we had tons of fun.
At the end of the day we didn't want to drive all the way back to Haleakela for camping so we decided to sleep in the van for the night. We originally parked ourselves in what we thought would be a safe corner of a State Park/Beach parking lot but halfway through the night we were awakened by a knocking on our windows. It was a cop who informed us that we could not stay there overnight and that it was dangerous to do so because of a problem with drug trafficking in these parking lots. But apparently it was ok to pull off anywhere along the highway and park/camp on the beach so that's what we ended up doing.
