South Maui, Lahaina, and the Luau

Luau

We had booked reservations at the Old Lahaina Luau which was recommended in the Maui Revealed guidebook as one of the most authentic luaus. We enjoyed checking out some traditional crafts before dinner, saw them unearth the pig from the sand pit in which it had been cooking and stuffed ourselves with lots of yummy Hawaiian food. After dinner was a show which featured various polynesian and hula dances from various time periods and included traditional music and storytelling.

Entertainment while we wait in line to get in.

The menu.

We got drinks and were seated at a traditional table where you sit on cushions on the ground.

As people were arriving there were displays set up to see Hawaiians making traditional arts and crafts such as this jewellery.

Hawaiian carvers.

The pit where the pig is being roasted under the sand for tonight's dinner.

The kids posing along the beach front.

A view of the dinner area with the traditional seating closer to the stage and the regular chairs and tables in behind.

Sam and Chris make a friend in a little 'hale' (house).

No food yet!

People milling about along the waterfront before the dinner and show.

Christopher and Rubby are getting into the aloha spirit!

Christopher enjoying a lava flow (virgin of course!) from the open bar.

Stunning views as the sun begins to set.

The island of Molokai across the channel.

A Hawaiian woman demonstrating some of the traditional musical instruments they will be using in the show.

Samantha gets a flower for her hair (on the right side to indicate she is single).

The roasted pigs have been cooking in the ground all day long and are now ready.

Who wants the pig's snout?!

The sunset at the Lahaina luau.

Chillaxing as we wait for the food to be ready.

Our waiter saying hello.

Christopher is excited to hit the buffet.

The highlight of the buffet of course is the pork that was slow cooked in the ground all day.

Although pretty bland, we had to try the taro which we have seen growing all over.

Mmmmm.... everything looks yummy!

Christopher looks pretty happy with his plate of food!

A great variety of foods to try.

And for those that leave enough room... dessert!

Time for some music and dancing.

The show includes some of the history of the islands which are told through various hula dances.

Great costumes and dancing.

Over the course of history the styles of hula have varied greatly.

The kids are getting sleepy.

The grand finale.
