sur les traces du météorite (earthcache)

extracts from the cache description:

"This earthcache, located on the shore of the St-Laurence river between Cap-aux-Oies and Cap-à-la-Corneille, takes you to the heart of the Charlevoix impact crater....

...Shock metamorphism produces a particular set of conical fractures called shattercones (or percussion cones) as well as many microscopic(mineral grain scale) deformations. Among these we can mention : planar deformation scructures, mineral and rock glasses and dense high pressure minerals even diamonds! Geologists use these deformations to identify meteorite impact structures....

...Shattercones (or percussion cones) are curved and striated fractures showing partial or complete cone reminiscent of a horsetail. They are the only shock deformation that is visible by the human eye. Percussion cones can be found individually or in groups and range from a few millimeters to several meters in length. The best shattercones are found in homogeneous, fine grained rocks such as limestones. Shattercones are excellent indicators for meteorite impacts and are usually abundant in the rocks located under the impact crater....

...350 millions years ago, the collision of a 2 km wide meteorite created the Charlevoix astrobleme, an impact crater 56 km in diameter. It was the first impact crater identified with shattercones..."

nice beach

looks like there are some locals enjoying the beach on this hot day.

wait a second... this is a nudist beach!

interesting rock formation.

we follow the train track all the way to the earthcache location.

passing by interesting rock formations.

lots of rail nails.

the beach is getting rockier.

almost there... just around the corner (hopefully no trains are coming)

this is the spot

we head down to investigate.

the rocks are all on an angle.

now to find the shattercones!

found one!

grandpa is searching for others.

a shattercone with the GPS

taking the manadatory photo

my turn.

a butterfly.

a shipping boat passes by

a smaller sample

a close up view.

some of the rocks along the train tracks were alos interesting.

good thing sam slept through this earthcache.

afterwards we head off to do another nearby geocache at the sight of the first shattercone discovery.

and here is it.

so we take another photo with the gps

we also spotted a benchmark.
