the logan fault (earthcache)

extract from the earthcache description:

"The city of Québec is divided into two geological parts: the Upper-Town and the Lower-Town, separated by a fracture of the earth's crust, the Logan fault. This fault is one of the most important faults in eastern North America. Don't worry, it's now inactive for hundreds of millions of years.

When you climb from the Lower-Town to the Upper-Town of Québec, by one of the multiple stairways or steep streets, you move from the platform of St. Lawrence to the Appalachians! You can follow this fault, also known as « Logan line », along the streets Arago, "de la Pente-Douce" and "du Versant-Nord" boulevard, for example.

The slopes of the promontory of Quebec as those of Salaberry, Abraham, or boulevard Henri IV are from slicks load during the formation of the Appalachians spanning over 250 million years. These slopes, and also the stairs of the Lower-Town of Quebec allow us to climb these slicks and move from a geological environment to another.

Finally, Quebec city is located at the junction of three geological aggregates: the Canadien Shield at north, the platform of the St. Lawrence River and the Appalachians. The rounded mountains of the Canadian Shield are made up of igneous and metamorphic rocks and are at least a billion years old.

Who is Logan? Sir William Logan was one of the first geologists who study the diversity of the geology of the Québec region and to study the fault that bears his name. He was a renowned geologist of the 19th century and a great explorer who has traveled Canada from coast to coast.
