November 5-28, 2011
At the end of the Pipiwai Trail you cross a stream and continue to Waimoku Falls which plunges 400 feet down the towering rock cliff of lava. Because of the heavy rains the stream crossings (of which there were now two) were a bit daunting but finally we decided that the trail did indeed continue on the other side so Rubby piggy-backed the kids across. The final view was well worth it... the waterfall was amazing... even more so once the rain abated and the sun shone on the waterfall with blue skies above. And although we typically prefer loop trails, in this case the way back was just as enjoyable (perhaps even more so in the parts that were now bathed in sunshine!)
This rushing stream almost had us stopped in our tracks but we couldn't turn back now and Rubby piggy-backed the kids carefully across.

Given the amount of rainfall and water run-off today, we decided to play it safe and actually heed the warning.
Wet and muddy, but give the guy a cookie and he's all smiles!
A spectacular view!
Rubby posing with the falls in the background.
And for most of the time we were there, we had the whole place to ourselves!
The kids amused themselves with this cone thing they found.
And finally they set the cone afloat in Pipwai Stream.
Having fun.
Hiking through the lush forest.
Sam back in the bamboo forest.
A side trail has been temporarily closed.
The falls by the bridges.
And just as we were getting used to the sun, another deluge of rain was upon us (as well as the crowds of tourists starting to show up on the trail).

Rubby snacking on a guava he picked along the trail.
A butterfly.
Christopher and Samantha tried the fruits as well... Christopher loved the guava, Sam couldn't stand it.
Back at the Banyan tree we decided to let the kids climb a bit (Rubby of course had to join them)
Posing on/in the Banyan tree.
Another look at Makahiku falls.
