From Kipahulu campground, just before getting to Hana, there's a beautiful fresh water pool. Called Waioka by the Hawaiians, it's also known as the Venus Pool. Located next to the ocean with a hala tree-capped ball of lava symmetrically dividing the sea view, it's only about a 15 minute hike from the highway where you park your car (park on the Hana side of the bridge near MM48). The trail skirts the land of the Hana Ranch and goes past a large concrete things that is an old Portuguese oven after which it veers sharply to the right and down a slippery slope of rocks to the stream. (From "Maui Revealed")
To get to the Venus Pool you have to cross private property...
the landowner wishes to remind folks that he is not responsible for injury to any person according to the law.
We head across the field in the hopes of still being able to catch the sunset at the Venus Pool.
As the sun starts to set the rainforest looks on fire.
You can sympathize with the locals who must get so annoyed with tourists who are disrespectful of the land and its people.
