Iceland: Day 1 - Nesjavellir

June 25, 2004

There was no rest for the weary and after a quick breakfast at the hotel, it was off on the bus to our first stop... Nesjavellir, a geothermal powerstation. A model of the plant at the reception area set the stage and we also got a brief presentation on geothermal power in Iceland. The hot water that is created from the power creation is actually transported around 40 km through pipes to Reykjavik. The pipes are well insulated so that the water only cools by fractions of a degree. The pipes are above ground for the most part and set on small wheels so that they have more give during the frequent earthquakes they get.
