Iceland: Day 15 - Jökulsarlón

July 9, 2004

This morning we woke up and tried to make as much noise as possible during breakfast, but our rude neighbours seemed unphased. European camping etiquette definitely leaves something to be desired!

After breakfast it was still foggy so we walked over to the glacier tongue Skaftafellsjökull and played around on the ice for a bit.

Finally the fog seemed to start to lift so we drove to Jökulsarlón, the glacial lagoon, for a boat tour sponsored by Gervaise and Conrad (Rubby's aunt and uncle). You may have seen footage of the lagoon in the first episode of this year's "The Amazing Race" when a couple got eliminated trying to find the buoys among the giant icebergs.

We also walked along the beach where the icebergs finally escape once they've melted enough and saw the seals playing in the water and we had sandwiches overlooking the lagoon.

Later on we found our own private glacial lagoon (Fjallsarlón) where we couldn't get as close to the icebergs but we met up with some interesting birds and saw some reindeer tracks.

We had dinner at Sandfell by the ruins of a church and one of the biggest trees we've seen in Iceland and finished the day playing frisbee and yahtzee back at the campsite.
