Iceland: Day 9 - Mývatn

July 3, 2004

Having found a sheltered grassy spot for the tent, got a great night sleep at the Vogar campground and slept in til about 10am. Got up to find a beautiful day and a little "dung frosted" gull waiting to entertain us while we ate our breakfast.

The day was spent exploring around Mývatn, the fourth-largest lake in Iceland (37.3 km²). Frequent lava flows have left the lake very irregular in shape, with many islets and rock formations in it. It is no more than 4.5 m at its deepest point and is internationally renowned as a bird-watching site. Mývatn enjoys some of the best summer weather in Iceland and rich flora flourishes around the lake. Mývatn is Icelandic for "midge lake". The guidebooks all warned about how annoying these little flies were but they didn't bite and after last year's trip to Newfoundland, this seemed like nothing at all. The whole Mývatn area has been protected by law since 1974 in order to preserve the unique nature so this is one area in Iceland where you can't just camp at the side of the road.

Among the things we visited today were:

A "dung frosted" gull greets us in front of our tent in the morning.
