Iceland: Day 9 - Vindbelgjarfjall

July 3, 2004

We decided to wait until around 11pm to start climbing Vindbelgjarfjall on the west side of Mývatn so that we could see the view in the glow of the 'sunset'. The path followed a 20 minute trek along a track to the base of the mountain. Marked with white pegs, it went through lowland heather and birch thickets and then was rocky all around the top - quite slippery and steep. From the windy top (529m) we got great views of the area.

Rubby reaches the top.

A panoramic view from the top looking over the pseudocraters.

View of 'our' crater across the lake.

The marshy lands to the north.

Rubby looking rather small in the vast landscape.

The 'lunar' landscape of the pseudocraters.

Looking back at the mountain from the bottom.
If you look *really* closely, you might be able to see the people at the top.
