Iceland: Day 17 - Rainbow Day

July 11, 2004

This morning we drove to Vik where we had breakfast while watching the gulls and puffins and then on to Dyrhólaey for more birdlife and amazing cliff formations.

From there we continued along the Ringroad past Sólheimajökull and eventually found ourselves back in familiar territory at Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

We spent a considerable amount of time scouring the towns for tourist information centers and a laundromat, but to no avail. We wanted to eventually head towards the Blue Lagoon but decided to take the coastal route (and having driven these gravel roads, we knew that the 2 buddies on the Amazing Race made a bad choice in picking this route which only lead to their elimination!)

At Selfoss we turned south to Stokkseyri and went to a fisherman's hut in honour of the only Icelandic woman to have a 50 year career as a boatperson (she got a special permit to wear men's clothing). Then we drove past Eyrarbakki and took a short walk along beach where we saw something that resembled a miniature "alligator's" skin. There was nothing much to see at Thorlakshofn other than the ferry to the Vestmannaiyer islands and the fishy smell made us leave pretty quickly.

We finished off the day near Kleifarvatn, one of Iceland's largest lakes, at the geothermal area of Krísuvík.
