Iceland: Day 17 - Sólheimajökull, Skogafoss & Seljalandsfoss

July 11, 2004

From Dyrhólaey we continued along Route 1 and stopped to play a bit at the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull.

For lunch we found ourselves back at Skogafoss (see also Day 3 photos) and we had hotdogs while watching 2 different couples drive their cars up by the front of the parking lot to photograph their cars with the Skogafoss backdrop. It was very amusing! Since we weren't bounded by the schedule of a tour, this time we hiked up the side of the waterfall to get the view from the top. This time we got to see the area on a beautiful sunny day which created rainbows over all the waterfalls. Before leaving we headed to the gift shop in Skogar where we bought a souvenir married troll couple and an Icelandic sweater (courtesy of Ma & Pa Neville... Thank you!)

We also decided to revisit Seljalandsfoss (see also Day 2 photos). Again we had more time and the weather was nice so we put on our rain gear and walked behind the waterfall curtain.

A note for those who watched the Amazing Race episode 1 this year... one of clues was found behind Seljalandsfoss and one of the couples first missed this waterfall and ended up at Skogafoss by mistake.

Rubby gets a closer view and checks out the little rivers coming from underneath the ice.

A beautiful sunny day at Skogafoss.

Considering the legend of treasure being hidden behind Skogafoss, there may well be a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow!

Once again we see how close you can get to these waterfalls here in Iceland!

We drove very slowly and carefully past these horses.
Did we mention this is the one major highway that goes all around Iceland?!

Seljalandsfoss - this time on a clear sunny day!

Rubby gets a shower at the base.

A path leads all along the back of the waterfall.

Looking up we saw a bird flying through the spray.
The water coming down is like a giant curtain.

We stopped in Hella to enjoy some soft icecream cones.
