Just a hop, skip and a jump away from Skogafoss was the folk museum. this is probably a stop that we would not have made on our own but we were glad to have done it with the tour because it was really interesting. skógasafn consisted of a reception area, museum of transportation, cafeteria, souvenirs, church, and an open air museum.
the church
the inside of the church... very typical colours for their churches
one of the buildings that is part of the open air museum
some of the items that can be seen inside one of the buildings
more of the buildings that are part of the open air museum
rubby trying to decide which building to visit next
this was the largest building... a two storey!
another room of the largest building
a typical icelandic boat for that time.
their boats, like most of the wooden construction of that time was all made from driftwood.
when driftwood was found on the shore, but couldn't all be brought back at once, icelanders would carve their symbol onto the wood in order to claim it and return later to collect it.
not really sure what this was, but it just look weird.
the wooden moulds were used to turn animal horns into spoons
bones from various animals... children used these as toys.
you can see the farmer and his wife along the edge and the sheep and coralled horses in the middle.
in the middle display case you can see the ring that was attached to the treasure chest hidden in skógafoss
a vehicle in the museum of transportation
