July 6, 2004
After our arctic circle adventure, we actually drove back to the Vogar campground at Mývatn since it had been such a good campground for us. We had a good sleep, showered and despite some minor stove problems, fixed ourselves a meal of licorice pasta (we thought Hunt's tomato sauce would be universally the same but had not counted on the Icelandic passion for licorice which made them add way too much fenugreek spice to their sauce... yuck!)
Our first stop was Husavík, which we didn't intend to visit for very long. Husavík is known for its whale watching but since we had managed to see whales the day before already, we didn't think it worthwhile to book another tour. However, our stay ended up being extended after keen eyes spotted the Icelandic phallological museum on our drive through the town.
Our next stop was Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, declared one of Iceland's 3 national parks in 1973. It is 30 km long and covers about 150 km². In the park we visited Hljóðaklettar (the Echo Rocks) and the Ásbyrgi canyon. The park was beautiful but today was the unfortunate day that the digital camera started to die.
Late in the day we drove on to Hafragilsfoss, Dettifoss and Selfoss, some of Iceland's most renowned waterfalls, before finally stopping to sleep in the car at 1:30 am.
The Laxá river by Mývatn, famous for its excellent salmon fishing.
