After Dynjandi, it was time to head back out of the West Fjords region. It was a cold but beautiful day and we took many breaks to check out the scenery, birds, and the local towns and sights.
We were up early but the mountains still were sleeping under their cloudy blankets.
Mjólkávirkjun - The Mjólká power plant produces and distributes electricity in the West Fjord region. 3 employees take care of the day to day running of the plant.
Some sheep kindly point out the way.
From the mountains...
... down the curvy roads to the valleys and the ocean.
Þingeyri is one of the oldes settlements of the West Fjords.
This 6km long tunnel provided us with a short cut through the mountains between Flateyri and Isafjorður. It's the first time we'd ever seen a tunnel with an intersection inside it!
Zooming along the inside of the tunnel.
We got excited at seeing another tunnel but at 200m in length, this one was a little less impressive.
These swans are called cyngus cygnus in latin... shouldn't that be cygnus cygnus cygnus?!
Sometimes the landscape can be particularly harsh... who builds these houses in such unprotected areas?
A picnic spot along the way.
Driftwood is made into planks - or some people have more artistic uses for it!
The fiels of hay are characteristic of Iceland. Here are the 3 pieces of machinery for the process - spreading, baling and wrapping.
