Iceland: Day 11 - An arctic picnic

July 5, 2004

The weather on Grímsey is relatively mild: The average temperature of the coldest month, January, is -1°C and the warmest, August, +8°C. On the day we were there it was much warmer and as we had our picnic, we actually had to put on suntan lotion because the sun was beating down so hard.

We followed the dirt road north past the airport and crossed the arctic circle.

This puffin kept flying out to sea and circling back, trying to find a good moment to land at its burrow to feed its chick.

Hard to make out, but this picture shows the puffin flying in just below us to land on the cliff.

A puffin on its 'front porch' checking out the neighbours and us.

Some birds hanging out on the rocky island below us and plenty more all along the shoreline cliffs.

Grassy tussocks.

Heading back to the town of Grimsey... what a beautiful day!
