We started our 2 hour ferry ride in Dalvík. It was a beautiful sunny day.
The ferry in the harbour at Dalvík. Along the way we saw plenty of sea birds making the clumsiest attempt at swimming away from the boat... turns out they were puffins! (It seems their swimming is even worse than their flying!) When we got to Grímsey we set off with a trusty tern stick in hand, and sure enough we found colonies of puffins nesting all along the shore of Grímsey.
the ferry to the arctic.
On the ferry leaving the mainland (and the clouds!) behind.
What's that thing that looks like it's drowning? It's a puffin!
According to the map, the arctic circle crosses the island at the little pile of rocks just off the tip on the left hand side.
When we got to Grímsey we headed off on the path along the coast. The weather was beautiful and the waters were crystal clear... it looked more like an island in the tropics than an arctic experience!
The first residents of Grímsey to say hello were... the puffins!
These puffins were a bit more shy than the ones at Latrabjarg.
