Also along the northern shore of Logurinn is Skriðuklaustur, the site of an ancient chieftain's manor which later was used as a monastery. The poet Gunnar Gunnarsson settled here in 1939 and built a stone house drafted by a German architect. In 2000 it became the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute which houses a cultural learning center.
The next stop was Egilsstaðir (pop. 1714), a small town which is nevertheless the transit hub for east Iceland. We stopped for groceries, a trip to the bank, and a quick car wash before heading off into the Eastfjords.
Skriðuklaustur
We take time to check out the garden and the architecture.
Bónus, our favourite stop for groceries (we visited almost every single Bónus in Iceland!)
Rubby really likes these car washing stations... and amazingly enough, they're FREE!
