Iceland: Day 13 - Lögurinn

July 7, 2004

Our first stop today was along the #1/917 junction where there was a pretty bridge and picnic spot. It was a really warm day and we enjoyed our little lunch, especially cause we finally found the windscreen for our stove (an item we had been sorely missing in the windy conditions of Iceland!).

We decided to drive around Lögurinn, a lake formed by the river Lagarfljót in the hopes of spotting the Lagarfljótsormur serpent (aka Laggi). Laggi is Iceland's own version of the Loch Ness monster and although there have been many recorded sightings since the 13th century, no photographs have ever been taken of her.

The southern side of Lögurinn also boasts Hallormsstaðarskógur. This is Iceland's largest forest, completely protected since 1905. It contains some 50 foreign tree species from 177 sources.

In the distance we could see the rocky spires of Snæfell, eastern Iceland's highest peak. This area is one of the best to see reindeer but they must have been hiding along with Laggi today cause we didn't see any.

It's warm in the sun. Who would have guessed we'd see 29ºC in Iceland!

Looking over Lögurinn to try and spot Laggi.

Lupines and Hairy Stonecrop (Sedum villosum).

A cute picnic table.
