Our drive through the Eastfjords finished with Lónsöræfi,an extensive uninhabited area east of the Vatnajökull glacier with dramatic mountains and fertile vegetation.
In Höfn we stopped at the info centre to book our tour. While there we also managed to catch a glacier exhibition that described how glaciers work and how the volcanos under the Icelandic glaciers can cause massive flooding and destruction. It was pretty impressive to think of the forces of nature at work here! Of course, equally impressive was that we found an 11/11 where we managed to get a coffee with unlimited refills, a gigantic cinnamon bun and chocolates for only 480 Ikr (about 10$... this may seem really expensive, but for Iceland that was quite the deal!)
We found the spot where the snowscooter tour would start and since we still had time, drove a little further and had a picnic with a gorgeous view of the glacier.
Whooper swans in the estuary of Lónsöræfi.
The morning clouds are slowly lifting off the mountains.
Syðrifjörður - the 'devil's mountain'?
Part of the glacier exhibit in Höfn.
A bird flies by several glacier tongues coming down from the main glacier Vatnajökull.
We found a great picnic spot off the main road overlooking the glacier.
