The Blue Lagoon was a sponsored wedding gift from Louise and Pierre (Rubby's aunt and uncle). Pierre had visited the Blue Lagoon before and his descriptions were pretty accurate... absolutely amazing! Thanks a million!
Though the lagoon looks like something born from Iceland’s otherworldly landscape, it is actually man made. It was created by run-off from the Svartsengi power plant, which pumps up the geothermally heated water from a full mile below the surface. After being used to generate both heat and electricity, the excess (which is absolutely clean) is ejected into the lagoon.
The temperature in the swimmable area averages about 40C (104F), and the soothing, mineral-rich water is rumored to have curative powers (although it does a real number on your hair!).
Since we got there first thing in the morning, it wasn't too busy yet. We got little electronic wrist bands that let us into the change areas and were also the key to our lockers. The water was sooooo warm, even though the day was rather on the cool side.

There's a sea monster (with toes!) visible through the steam.
