Iceland: Day 23 - Around Hverargardi

July 17, 2004

This morning we drove to Hafnarfjordur (suburb of Reykjavík) where we had coffee and pastries for breakfast. We then drove on to Hverargardi, the town where we spent our first few days in Iceland. Here we discovered the most awesome campground with free showers and self-serve laundry for 200 Ikr. !!???!!! Why had we not found this earlier! We didn't need to do laundry anymore but we took the opportunity to wash up and have lunch.

After our 1 hour horse back riding tour in the afternoon, we got a final taste of Icelandic ice cream in Hverargardi, and a free lamb tryout at the Bonus grocery store to boot (in Canada the most you'd get are sausage samples, in Iceland they cook up lamb!)

In the evening we had coffee at Eden and drove to the golf course where we checked out the man made geysir. We drove back to the campsite to do our final packing, have dinner and shower. Not wanting to go to sleep for fear of missing our flight we spent the night driving around and returned hotel Clio at the airport early in the morning.

The sign between Reykjavík and Hverargardi warns motorists of the dangers of driving... since our arrival in Iceland the number of road fatalities had risen from 11 to 13.

This scarecrow looks good but it doesn't seem to be affecting the oystercatchers!
