Iceland: Day 22 - Reykjavík

July 16, 2004

Since we couldn't go riding until the next day, we decided to give Reykjavík another shot and this time we finally got to see the city in sunlight.

First we drove to Perlan to get the panoramic overview of the city sparkling in the sun. Then we drove downtown and walked around City Hall and the adjacent pond. We also walked around the harbour where we watched some kids fishing and fish hanging to dry on the boats.

We stopped at a cafe so that Rubby could try some waffles (these things seem really popular in Iceland) and we spent about 2 hours marveling at the 80's comeback that seems to have taken place here - we saw miniskirts with pants or funky tights, Peter Pan boots, mullets, Converse shoes... yikes!

Instead of waffles, opted for a second visit to Bæjarins Beztu for one of the famous hotdogs and we headed back to the park with the outdoor photo exhibit where we spent several more hours people watching.

AFter a final jaunt around the pond at City Hall, we headed back to the car and camped at a viewpoint between Reykjavík and Keflavík for the night (in Hotel Clio of course). We noted that the lupines were starting to fade from when we had first arrived and the days were starting to get shorter - sunset tonight was at 12:00 pm!

For previous photos of Reykjavík, see day 5 and day 19.

The view over Reykjavík from the observation deck at the Perlan.

This cemetary seemed to have huge trees by Icelandic standards...
good fertilizers in the soil?!

The duck pond with City Hall in the background.

Even in Iceland we're faced with Idol mania!

Some of the colourful houses and a local enjoying the sun on the street corner.

Huge windows and brightly painted corrugated metal siding are typical of many Icelandic homes.

Boats in the harbour.

The fish drying on the boat's mast were a bit smelly!

Back at the outdoor photo exhibit, we found a bench to people watch.

The cafe is also located by this popular park square.

Looking back at Hallgrímskirkja from the pond next to City Hall.

From people-watching to duck-watching.

The mommies are all taking their little ones for an evening swim.

The last of the lupines for the summer.

The days are getting shorter - sunset at 12 pm.
